Deserve is a lonely word
Sometimes you will hear them say, "you deserve to be happy".
But what is 'deserve', in a world that lets so many die of diseases for which we already have the cure? What role does it play? Where might we find it?
It is an unloved word, deserve. Very few love it, and it is nearly alone in this strange world, for few come to it.
And we see a world with many things people do not deserve, for its absence. Many, many horrors and tragedies and injustices and not nearly as much mercy as you might hope.
Surely, if you deserve love, you ought to love 'deserve'. The pain of unrequited love can be so powerful, and yet there's something beautiful about it's tenderness.
Perhaps in the age to come, 'deserve' will be the watchword of all mankind. It is hard not to notice that we spell it 'de-serve' -- perhaps if now is our time of service, deserve is what happens when that comes to an end?
